An outdoor kitchen on a travel trailer puts a dedicated cooking and prep station on the outside of the rig, usually built into the exterior wall under the awning. Most include a propane burner or grill, a bit of counter space and a small fridge so you can run a full outdoor bbq without dragging your inside galley outside. The Springdale 335BH and Cougar Half-Ton 32RDBWE are two popular examples.

Exterior kitchens vary in how complete they are. Some are a basic burner and a small counter, while others add a sink with running water and a 12-volt or propane fridge, making them genuinely useful for cooking a whole meal outside.

Benefits of outdoor kitchen

  • Keeps heat and cooking smell out of the trailer
  • Extra prep and counter space outside
  • Great for feeding a crowd at the campsite

Things to consider

  • Appliances add weight, check your payload
  • Water lines need winterizing before storage

Similar layouts

On most travel trailers the outside kitchen sits on the curb side, the side that faces your campsite when you pull in, which makes it easy to use while everyone is hanging around outside. A few floor plans put it on the street side, which is much less convenient, so check the layout diagram before you buy. The Springdale 266DECK and Transcend Xplor 315BH are good examples of layouts where the exterior kitchen is well-positioned relative to the living area.

If you cook big meals on camping trips, an outdoor kitchen earns its keep. It keeps grease, heat, and smoke out of the trailer, and the extra counter space alone helps if you find the inside galley cramped. Families who camp with kids and pets often like being able to grill and serve outside without traffic through the living space. Just remember the added appliances add weight, so if you are already near your tow vehicle's limit, weigh that carefully. If an outdoor kitchen is a must-have, also look at fifth wheel trailers with an outdoor kitchen or a travel trailer with a kitchen island for more indoor counter space too.

Popular questions

What is typically included in a travel trailer outdoor kitchen?

Most exterior kitchens include a propane burner or grill, a small countertop, and a storage cabinet. Higher-end setups add a sink with running water and a 12-volt or propane refrigerator. The exact equipment varies by floor plan, so check the feature list for any model you are considering.

Does the outdoor kitchen face the campsite or the road?

Almost all floor plans place the kitchen on the campsite side. The street side is typically only used for slide-outs, hookups and tank dumping.

Can I use the outdoor kitchen in cold weather?

You can use it in light rain if the awning covers it, but most outside kitchens are not built for cold-weather camping. If you store the trailer over winter, the sink and any water lines in the exterior kitchen need winterizing just like the interior plumbing, or the pipes can freeze and crack.
