A side patio on a fifth wheel is a fold-down deck built into the sidewall, usually with a railing, an awning overhead and a sliding glass door into the living space. Most are found on toy hauler fifth wheels like the Momentum 399TH and the Valor 42V13, where the same wall panel doubles as a patio.

Closed up, it's just a wall. Open, it adds a shaded outdoor space that you can step into without having to set foot on the actual ground.

  • Great for entertaining —gives you a separate hangout space without everyone crowding the main interior.

Things to consider

  • Adds considerable weight that will eat into overall cargo carrying capacity
  • More components to maintain — hinges, seals, latches, cables/supports and patio doors are additional potential failure or leak point
  • Requires a wide campsite — trees, neighboring RVs, utility posts, picnic tables, or narrow sites can make the patio unusable

Side patios show up most often on fifth wheel toy haulers, since the garage wall is already reinforced and the ramp door hardware carries over. Good to know: a side patio needs a site with room on that side, which is not a given at older state parks or tight private lots.
