Fifth wheel trailers with a side patio
A side patio on a fifth wheel is a fold-down deck built into the sidewall, usually with a railing, an awning overhead and a sliding glass door into the living space. Most are found on toy hauler fifth wheels like the Momentum 399TH and the Valor 42V13, where the same wall panel doubles as a patio.
Closed up, it's just a wall. Open, it adds a shaded outdoor space that you can step into without having to set foot on the actual ground.

Fifth wheel trailers with side patio and...
Benefits of side patio
- Elevated outdoor space — nice when the campsite is muddy, sandy, uneven, or buggy compared with sitting directly on the ground
- Kids and pets can be "outside" while still being somewhat contained and visible
- Sliding glass door brings in extra daylight - making the whole rig feel brighter
- Opening the patio door makes the main living area feel dramatically larger
- Great for entertaining —gives you a separate hangout space without everyone crowding the main interior.
Things to consider
- Adds considerable weight that will eat into overall cargo carrying capacity
- More components to maintain — hinges, seals, latches, cables/supports and patio doors are additional potential failure or leak point
- Requires a wide campsite — trees, neighboring RVs, utility posts, picnic tables, or narrow sites can make the patio unusable
Similar layouts
Side patios show up most often on fifth wheel toy haulers, since the garage wall is already reinforced and the ramp door hardware carries over. Grand Design's Momentum line made the layout popular, and you will see the same idea in the Raptor 429 and the Road Warrior 4275. Many pair the patio with a side bar or a TV mounted on the exterior wall, so browse fifth wheel toy haulers and fifth wheels with a garage if you want the cargo space too.
Good to know: a side patio needs a site with room on that side, which is not a given at older state parks or tight private lots. If you mostly boondock or base camp with plenty of elbow room, it is a great fit. If you weekend at packed campgrounds, look at fifth wheels with a rear patio instead, since the rear deck opens into your own back yard rather than your neighbor's site.
These are big rigs, commonly 40 feet and up, and the patio hardware adds extra weight. Weigh the RV loaded and confirm your truck handles the pin weight before you fall for the deck.
Popular questions
How big is the side patio on a fifth wheel?
Most fold-down side decks run roughly 10 to 12 feet long and stick out about 4 feet from the wall, though it varies by model.
Does a fifth wheel with a side patio have to be a toy hauler?
Not always, but many are. The reinforced wall and heavy hinge hardware are easiest to build into a toy hauler garage, so non-garage fifth wheels with a side patio deck are less common. If you want the patio without hauling toys, compare the handful of side patio layouts here against rear patio floor plans.
What size fifth wheel do you need for a side patio?
Expect something in the high 30s to mid 40s in length. That means a 3/4-ton truck at minimum and often a one-ton dually once the rig is loaded.
